If you love adventure vehicles, off-roading and traveling—chances are you’re into the associated gear that goes with them. Proper gear can make you more prepared, smarter and self-reliant both on and off the pavement.

Over 360 exhibitors showed their adventure, off-road and travel wares at the 10^th annual Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, AZ. From winches to ratchet straps, air compressors to lift kits, as well as every product you could think of in between—hundreds of items were on display and available for purchase.

Gear

Lots of items were on display. Long-standing quality products, as well as new items were enticing potential buyers.

Garmin showed up in full force—showcasing their highly anticipated Garmin Overlander GPS unit. This product combines turn-by-turn directions along with topographic maps, so you’re ensured seamless adventure travel. Along with a seven-inch screen, this GPS powerhouse has built-in pitch and roll gauges, barometer and altimeter, and includes points of interest (POIs) from apps like iOverlander, TripAdvisor, Foursquare and others. It can track your routes and has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, can be paired with your InReach satellite device as well as a host of other opportunities. Anticipated release date July of 2019, $699.99.

Benchmade is known for manufacturing quality knives. The newly released 591 BK Boost is a mechanic’s must. It is the latest member of the Boost knife grouping and carries the same contented dual-durometer ergonomics. The action is swift and is supported by the Axis-assist mechanism. This allows for ambidextrous admission to durable CPM-3V steel. The blunt blade tip is meant as a tool—prying your way to mechanical success. This knife has its home in either your pants pocket or in your heavy-duty tool box. Price is $190.00.

Warn Industries has been in business for over 70 years making parts for 4WD vehicles including winches. They recently came out with new winch rigging accessories, including their new winch hook replacement called the Sidewinder. This unit is made from forged 6061 T6 billet aluminum, has a forged steel screw pin and can be used with 18,000 lb. capacity winches and under. A red or black polyurethane isolator is available separately for purchase to protect the pin.  Available finishes include polished, gunmetal (as shown) or black. The Sidewinder is $139.99, with the isolator $9.99 extra.

Lightforce recently released its new Striker 850nM LED infrared (IR) driving lights. Their IP68 and IP69K dust and water ingress protection ratings means they’re designed to tackle just about anything you throw at them. Dirt, mud or water? No problem. A pair of Striker IR lights, spot filters, reversible mounts and hardware and installation kit is $824.00.

Since October of 2017, Long Range America has been importing high-quality Australian auxiliary/replacement fuel tanks for a variety of 4x4s: Toyotas, Jeeps, Nissans, Mitsubishis and Land Rovers. Designed for Australian, Japanese and US market 4x4s, these tanks have been adapted to meet North American emission systems where possible. While their most popular kits are for the Tundra, Tacoma (such as the 2005-current model tank shown in photo), 200 Series, FJ Cruiser and Jeep JK, they have prototype tanks en route to the US for the second generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, Jeep Wrangler JL and Lexus GX 460, as well as fifth gen Toyota 4Runners. Price range: $1,500-1,800 (plus shipping).

DMOS showcased its brand new Delta dirt shovel, a heavy-duty collapsible unit to aid in vehicle recoveries.  The Delta is nearly production-ready; final refinements are currently being completed. Release date is slated via Kickstarter mid-June. Estimated pricing: $150-200.

Big Agnes also stepped up their camping game by offering up new foldable camp chairs. Their Big Six chair has a tall back, wide bottom, and perches 20″ off the ground. This comfortable and stable chair comes in several colors and is $149.95.  

Rigs

Along with cool gear, there were hundreds of amazing rigs to check out. Scattered about the venue were everything from old-school home-built conversions to high-end off-road fortresses that contained every option imaginable.

Manufacturers including Toyota, Land Rover and Jeep showed up in force. Nissan, Honda, and all sorts of other auto makers donned their rigs, too.

Also present at Expo West was a unique build by J Sport, a new AWD Honda Passport Elite. This rig was fully customized, and donned a rear tire carrier, rock sliders with side steps, roof rack with rooftop tent, as well as Nitto Ridge Grapplers. This Honda is definitely built for adventure.

Hundreds of awesome adventure vehicles were scattered about in camping areas, too. Each rig was built with its owner’s needs in mind. Whether that was long-range travel, or weekend warrior mode—each was different and unique. Dozens of Ural motorcycles were also present, and even came together to perform a Ural parade around Expo West.

No matter if lifted, re-geared, modified, fabricated, or revised in one fashion or another; each vehicle had a story, with owners eager to talk to you about them.
