If you’ve been in any sort of online forum or group about cars since December 3, you’ve undoubtedly heard about how President Trump went off the cuff during his announcement of fuel economy rollbacks to talk about small cars. Maybe kei cars. Specifically, he in 160 words, he wants “very small,” “really cute” cars to be sold in the U.S. (This is an article I wrote for GearJunkie.) He said it was going to happen. Apparently, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is going to make it happen. Of course, we have no idea if it’s really going to happen. Of course, no one asked if anyone wanted this to happen.
In an article I wrote at our sister site, Subcompact Culture, I talk about whether or not people really want small kei cars, or if it’s even possible. In the article, “Trump Wants A Return to Small Cars In the U.S., But Does Anyone Else?” we take a closer look at what it would take for Japanese kei cars to show up here, but also if anyone would even buy them.
Do you want the smallest of small cars to be sold/built here? Sound off in the comments.
