We’ve been talking and writing a lot about Oregon and its move to legalize kei trucks. As of tonight, there are new developments.
Scrapping SB 1213 In Favor of an Amendment to HB 2025
Senator Anthony Broadman and the supporters of SB 1213, which would legalize “kei trucks,” have decided to scrap the bill. Instead, they’re going to try to amend HB 2025. HB 2025 is further along and has a better shot at getting passed this session. The session ends June 29, 2025.
It’s “Kei Trucks” For Now
While the current language only mentions “kei trucks,” I’m told by a source in contact with Senator Broadman’s office, that any effort to edit the language may slow the bill down. Instead, I’m told the language will continue to say “kei trucks.” This should still cover all kei vehicles, which are defined in the -10 Amendment. If HB 2025 passes with the amendment, the bill could be amended again at a later date to include the “kei vehicle” language vs. “kei trucks.”
The -10 Amendment Looks Almost the Same as SB 1213
The -10 amendment to HB 2025 reads nearly identically to the previous SB 1213. It talks about kei vehicle engine size and dimensions. However, it’s changed the engine wording to say kei trucks have displacements up to 660 cubic centimeters instead of just having 660cc engines. There’s also the mention that these vehicles won’t be able to be used on roads with speed limits higher than 65 MPH. (Most roads in Oregon are 65 and under.)
You Must Act Fast: Submit Testimony By June 14 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time!
If you’d like to weigh in on this and HB 2025, you may submit your testimony online. But you must act fast: the deadline is June 14 by 4:00pm Pacific time. Let them know you’re in favor of HB 2025, and you’d like to see Oregon legalize kei trucks, cars, SUV, and vans.
