Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that VW part number 00010 ZDK-259-101, VW Gewürz Ketchup Brand, a condiment used to dress VW currywurst, will be available in the U.S. for a limited time. The public can claim their very own bottle, distributed through DriverGear, starting today at no cost while supplies last.
What’s The Big Deal About VW Ketchup?
The Volkswagen brand has produced and provided food items like the VW currywurst sauce for its German plant employees for decades. Fans familiar with this condiment know it is famous for being paired with Volkswagen’s currywurst sausage, first created in 1973.
The official currywurst recipe is a secret known only to a few people and was developed by Volkswagen-employed chefs. The uniquely spiced sausage is often served chopped into bite-size slices in a bowl and drenched with the sauce. It was Volkswagen’s currywurst—also sold under an official VW part number—that originally inspired the Volkswagen condiment production, dating back to 1996. There was no mention of the actual sausages coming to the U.S.; just the sauce.
A Saucy Surprise
I was shocked to see this press release come into my inbox this morning. This is because, this summer while on the Baltic Sea Circle Rally, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (aka Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge) gave us a bottle of this delicious condiment. They were also kind enough to supply a pack of their famous currywurst to try. Frankly, I’m not exactly a ketchup aficionado. Heck, I’m not really a fan. However, this isn’t just any ketchup it’s VW Gewürz Ketchup. It’s sweet, tangy, and a hint vegetative. One taste and I was hooked. Once out of currywurst, we found it good on a host of other foods.
We were able to nab a bottle early this morning, but since then, the site appears to have been hard to get on. But if you hurry, you might be able to get your bottle of German sauce at no cost.
UPDATE: As of 9/23 at 9:30 PDT, reports came in that the VW ketchup is no longer available! We hop you got yours!
